So, I came across this interesting formula that seeks to decode why (how?) Spain won the World Cup 2026. The acronym used was creatively (conveniently?) S.P.A.I.N. — Strategic Passing, Precision in Possession, Attacking Intelligence, Inspiring Teamwork and Naturally Gifted Players. S.P.A.I.N. Clever huh?
Now everyone knows how they could have been saved after the ship has sunk and some critics will argue that if Spain had lost there would be no talk of S.P.A.I.N. That’s not our concern here because this is a sales, not football, blog.
So, forget the post-match analysis. Here is the winning SPAIN formula in selling to ensure you don’t sink
Strategic Passing
Football fanatics will tell you that Spain completed over 850 passes in the final, controlling the ball 65% of the time. Yup! The fanatics counted. Spain moved the ball not just to move it, but to probe for weaknesses and create opportunities.
Effective salespeople start the B2B sale (say selling enterprise-wide software) at a high entry level where decisions are made. Less effective ones interact with receptionist and clerical staff and hope for the best. They are happy to peck in the dirt like chicken than soar the air like eagles, as they should.
The respective outcomes are clear—the high entry ball gets passed among decision makers thus getting closer and closer to the goal while the low entry sale moves in circles gathering dust and going nowhere.
Precision in Possession
Spain didn’t just pass—they passed with purpose. Every pass was deliberate, every touch calculated. That’s what allowed them to frustrate Argentina and never give up the ball. All this while controlling the ball 65% of the time. Meaning they did so without losing control of the ‘sale’.
For business owners, precision in possession could be frustrated by annoying processes. Sales people selling insurance premium finance (IPF), for example, get frustrated when the bank they are selling for insists that all applications must be assessed like any other loan for risk— yet there is none— and so frustrating the turn around time and selling success.
Being precise with whom you sell to, spending most of your selling time with customers, and continually refining the sales process facilitates success of the selling process.

Attacking Intelligence
Spain didn’t wait for chances. They created them. They attacked with intelligence, reading the game, finding the gaps, and exploiting them. Ferran Torres’ 106th-minute goal wasn’t random—it was the result of relentless, smart pressure.
Following up from the previous two steps, effective salespeople leave nothing to chance. They think through how to handle objections and pre-empt them in their presentations.
Effective salespeople have no qualms about asking hard questions to remove the cholesterol from their sales pipeline. Neither do they wait for the 3rd email resend to be responded to, but instead show up at the customers office unannounced to announce, “Your deposits dropped by 20million yesterday. Anything we did wrong?”
Inspiring Teamwork
Spain’s coach, Luis de la Fuente, built a team where veterans and teenagers worked seamlessly together. Rodri controlled the midfield while teens like Lamine Yamal brought fearless energy. Like a matatu crew, they played for each other.
Effective sales managers know which team members to pair as part of the coaching process, use different tools to motivate knowing money is not a silver bullet, and fire those that are not pulling their weight.
As for effective salespeople, they tend to be loners but they know the importance of teamwork. If that’s you, you leave nothing to chance. You track the sale at every step of the way adapting your pitch accordingly. And when you cannot selling to that critical decision maker, you prep the buyer to pitch for you.
As you sell externally, you also do so internally to back office because you know you need them to complete the sale.
Naturally Gifted Players
Spain has talent, no doubt. But talent alone doesn’t win you a World Cup. Their natural ability was unlocked by the system around them. They had the right players in the right roles.
Now you know that hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard. This gem of wisdom cannot be gainsaid in selling. “Are salespeople born or made?” “Are leaders made or born?” “Are extroverts more effective in selling than introverts?” “Are…
If you are still debating this, you are not selling. Selling is a skill, not a debate. And skills can be learnt; and talented or not, if you do not hone the skill it will show in your dismal performance.
The winning SPAIN formula in sales
Spain proved when you combine strategic passing, precision, intelligence, teamwork, and talent—there’s nothing you can’t achieve is selling.
Spain went unbeaten in 38 matches, conceded just one goal in the entire tournament, and won everything: the World Cup, the European Championship, and Olympic gold. They’re now the standard-bearers of what intelligent, effective football —and Sales—looks like.
But.
Winners Spain (and by etension you) are also at once defending champions in World up 2030. And in this position, they— and you— best remember that Success contains the seeds of its own destruction.
